REVIVAL: Neighborhood Stories at Grant’s Tomb Memorial Park

  • Grant's Tomb Memorial Park Riverside Dr & W 122nd St New York, NY, 10027 United States (map)

Set against the backdrop of Grant’s Tomb, this performance brings together older Harlem residents to share their stories through dance. REVIVAL: Neighborhood Stories at Grant’s Tomb will explore the neighborhood’s cultural evolution, drawing from personal recollections of music, activism, and community life.

REVIVAL: Neighborhood Stories

Follow older community members through dance performances that incorporate local and personal histories into music and movement. This performance project will center on the older residents of the neighborhoods where DVP’s programs take place, using our Movement Speaks workshops to develop dance forms and soundscapes that reflect and incorporate their lived experiences.

The neighborhoods of New York City are constantly changing due to waves of immigration, the rapid pace of gentrification, and the passage of time. The daily life that gives each neighborhood its own character is deep but ephemeral, and older residents are a portal to the NYC of the past. REVIVAL: Neighborhood Stories will preserve and share the individual recollections of people who have lived in their neighborhoods for decades, and will transform these memories and moments into dance performances that honor the past and enrich the current cultural experience.
